Broadday (2025): An Action Film Rooted in Detroit History

Broadday is a 2025 action-drama written, directed, edited, and produced by Mann Robinson of Mann Robinson Studios. The film transports viewers back to the gritty streets of Detroit during one of the city’s most notorious crimes—the 1996 armored truck heist that shocked the community and made national headlines.

As a true fan of crime dramas, especially those rooted in real events, Broadday checked every box for me. It’s the kind of film that pulls you in with high-stakes storytelling and keeps you locked in with its authentic portrayal of the era.

The story centers on Tyron Hatchett, played by Hiram “Hydro” Robinson—a seemingly average armored truck security guard who makes the life-altering decision to rob his own truck. What follows is a whirlwind of drama, betrayal, and mounting consequences that ripple through everyone connected to him.

Brittany Chanel delivers both depth and fire as Netta, Tyron’s cousin and loyal best friend, adding emotional weight to the unfolding chaos. Stuart “Sonny” Ovando (Willie Bobo) and Brandon “Beasy” Cornett (Jimmy) round out the core cast with strong, natural screen presence, grounding the film with believable and engaging performances.

Special mention goes to Ebony Tates as Wanda—the crackhead sister whose performance captures a familiar kind of chaos that many families knew too well during that era.

Beyond the performances, what really pulls you in is the attention to detail. From FUBU sweatshirts and payphones to clunky desktop computers, floppy disks, and even a Clinton/Gore ‘96 billboard, the set design is a time machine for anyone who lived through the ‘90s. One of the most nostalgic touches? That thick yellow phone book tucked under the end table—something that instantly transported me to my grandma’s living room. Even the TV in the background looked like it was pulled straight from the past.

The pacing is right, the dialogue feels natural, and the cinematography captures both the mood of the streets and the tension of lives unraveling. Mann Robinson’s ability to wear multiple hats behind the scenes (writing, directing, editing, and producing) speaks volumes to his commitment to the story and his craft.

As a true fan of crime stories, black independent cinema, or just appreciate a film that gets the little things right, Broadday is worth adding to your watchlist.

On the Cori Luv Luv Scale, Broadday easily earns a Director’s Cut rating—a must-watch for fans of bold storytelling, era-specific detail, and Black indie cinema done right.
