Born and raised in the heart of Detroit, Mercedes has always been surrounded by creativity—whether through music, dance, or storytelling. But her journey to the big screen wasn’t just about talent; it was about passion, resilience, and unwavering faith.
While she has always loved the arts, her most cherished role is being a mother—a constant source of inspiration for everything she does.
Inspiration for Acting and Preparation for a Role
Rest in peace to my mother—she was the reason I started acting. She submitted me for my first audition for a stage play, and that moment sparked a passion within me that has never dimmed. She always saw my potential, and for that, I am forever grateful.
Mercedes loves that every character she plays has a unique story and personality. To prepare for the character she studies thoroughly, envisions their mannerisms, emotions, and experiences. Embodying the essence of a character, allowing myself to become them in every aspect, from speech to body language.
Handling Challenges and Enjoying the Memorable Moments
Independent filming comes with unique challenges, from budget constraints to unpredictable shooting conditions, to “no’s” which I look at as a step closer to the right opportunities.
However, independent filming also offers incredible creative freedom and collaboration. Working with other amazing talents and being able to help a script come to life is deeply fulfilling. Moments that impact me most are the ones where we see our hard work of everyone around me come together beautifully on screen.
It also helps others to build relationships that can help encourage and potentially save someone from giving up. That’s why on every set, I strive to be uplifting and understanding toward my fellow cast and crew members.
Exciting Projects Forthcoming
While I’ve played many roles, I’ve always been eager to take on roles that will merge my love for singing with acting. Luckily for me, an upcoming project will give me the opportunity to portray a singer, so this will allow me to showcase my vocal abilities while acting.
Misconceptions About Acting
One of the biggest misconceptions about being an actress is that success is simply handed to you. In reality, it takes dedication, hard work, and constant learning. Every opportunity is earned through persistence and preparation.
Advice for Aspiring Actresses
Keep God first and always stay true to yourself—your journey in acting starts with authenticity. Find your lane, embrace what makes you unique, and sharpen your skills through acting classes. Every set is a classroom, so soak up knowledge, observe, and learn from the actresses you admire. The more you study, the more you grow, and the closer you get to mastering your craft!
