Charles Bell, a dedicated production assistant, offers a candid look into what it takes to work behind the scenes in film production.

Finding Inspiration in a Presidential Speech
Charles Bell’s journey into the world of film began in 2014. While he initially thought it would be a glamorous career, his true inspiration came from an unexpected source—a speech by then-President Barack Obama in Los Angeles.
“Obama spoke about the working-class people behind the scenes, how people all over the world watch our movies, and are inspired to come to America,” Bell recalls. This realization ignited his passion for contributing to the industry, starting with the foundational role of a production assistant (P.A.).
The P.A.: The Backbone of Production
Bell describes production assistants as the “front lines of production.” From running errands to picking up talent, props, or food, and assisting with equipment like cameras and lights, P.A.s are integral to the smooth functioning of a set. “It’s the best way to get your foot in the door,” he says, emphasizing that the role offers valuable experience for those aiming to grow into specific crew positions.

Misconceptions and Realities
While Bell couldn’t pinpoint specific misconceptions about P.A.s, he strongly advises aspiring filmmakers to embrace the role as a stepping stone. “You must be willing to start as a P.A. before moving into specific crew positions. Do a good job, take feedback, and take initiative—you’ll be golden.”
Advice for Aspiring Production Assistants
Bell offers practical tips for those considering this path:
Just Do It: Don’t question why you’re tasked with something; focus on completing it safely and effectively.
Communication is Key: If you’re unsure how to do something, ask. If you’re running late, inform your point-of-contact immediately.
Be Early: In the film industry, punctuality isn’t negotiable. “Being stuck in traffic is NOT an excuse,” he warns.
Take Initiative: Show interest in specific departments after gaining general experience.

Overcoming Challenges and Building Connections
Mistakes are inevitable, Bell admits. “You may get fussed at, but don’t take it personally. Learn from it.” He also stresses the importance of staying composed during last-minute changes. “Roll with it. Stay cool. You’re building your career and connections.”
Reflecting on the Journey
Looking back, Bell has no regrets about his start in the industry. However, his sense of humor and resilience have been key to navigating challenges. “You will make mistakes. What matters is how you learn and move forward.”
